TorChat is a basic and portable freeware instant messaging application which allows you to chat securely with other people. The TorChat network is peer-to-peer with a decentralized design, similar to Gnutella. This decentralized network gives you high anonymity and being portal, does not leave any traces on your system.
This is actually the Windows version, but the developer also provides a version for Linux.
Compatibility and License
TorChat has been released under the open source GPL license on Windows from instant messaging software. The license provides the options to freely download, install, run and share this program without any restrictions. The source code for TorChat should be freely available and modifications are certainly permitted as well as the option to inspect the software.
